MISSION – To build and maintain dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives in the Greater Dallas area, including Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.
Although our mission gives us broad latitude to engage in building projects across the entire Continuum of Care, from emergency shelters to transitional housing to permanent supportive housing, every HomeAid project includes support services that help residents move toward self-sufficiency, such as education and job skills training, physical and emotional support, etc.
PURPOSE – HomeAid/Home Builders Care is a revolutionary public/private/ non-profit partnership program designed to increase the number of multi-unit shelter beds utilizing its expertise to identify effective, reputable service providers in local communities who are in need of new or expanded facilities.
Upon approval, HomeAid recruits a Builder Captain who will lead and supervise the construction or renovation of the project and in turn brings the in-kind resources of their subcontractors, suppliers and consultants, while HomeAid works closely with community leaders to maximize community support. Grant funds are not used as capital funds for construction, but provide the needed technical assistance services to both the approved care provider and the recruited builder captain to plan, develop, construct and complete the project.
HISTORY –
1989 Concerned leaders from Southern California’s building industry chose to make a difference in the lives of individuals who did not have the most basic of human needs – housing. These builders established HomeAid, a program that increases the availability of life-changing housing for homeless people committed to turning their lives around.
1995 After completing a number of successful shelters in California, the national expansion of HomeAid was launched. HomeAid has expanded throughout the country to 20 chapters in 15 states and two national offices: Pensacola, FLA and Newport Beach, CA (headquarters).
2000 HomeAid/Home Builders Care was established under the auspices of the Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas as the 10th HomeAid chapter.
2009 Through the generosity of America’s builders, their trade partners, financial institutions, and the public, HomeAid has built more than 200 multi-unit shelters with an additional 36 in development. These shelters provide more than 4,846 beds per night nationwide. Each bed serves an average of three people per year. HomeAid has provided housing for more than 100,000 individuals who have been rendered temporarily homeless due to circumstances beyond their control.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT - HomeAid/Home Builders Care has attracted financial support from The Meadows Foundation, Hoblitzelle Foundation, Fannie Mae Foundation, Bank of America, Young Foundation, Zale Foundation, various corporations, as well as the HBA’s own divisions and councils and membership.
