Register for Nexus Vendor Reception at HBA Now

Groundbreaking ceremonies were recently held for a new 13,200-sq.-ft. adolescent dormitory on the 12-acre campus of Nexus Recovery Center, Inc. located at 8733 La Prada in East Dallas. The new dormitory will provide for 16 bedrooms, full laundry facilities, two classrooms that will be staffed by the Dallas Independent School District, a children’s playroom, a workout and lounge area, and a large group room.   

According to Roberto Castanheira, president of HomeAid/Home Builders Care, “Now the real work begins, and Bob Moore Construction, Inc., and HomeAid are hosting a reception for vendors to learn more about how they can help Nexus Recovery Center continue their mission by donating and discounting supplies and labor. Numerous companies are already involved in this special project and representatives will be in attendance from HKS, Inc., HGA Architects and Engineers, SW Associates Consulting Engineers, and KSQ Architects, PC.”

The reception will be held Wednesday, July 13, at 4 p.m. at the offices of the Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas located at 5816 W. Plano Parkway, Plano, TX  75093. For additional information and to RSVP contact Jenny Lynn at 972.248.1061 or email Jenny Lynn.

Troy Aikman has accepted an invitation to play in the 3^rd Annual Fairway to Haven Charity Golf Classic benefiting HomeAid. Troy will be teaming up with Mitchell Fadel, President and CEO of Rent-A-Center, Inc. and a member of the HomeAid Board of Directors. As a fundraising idea, they’re auctioning off the other two player spots on their team for a minimum bid of $600 per player. Rising to the challenge are James B. Cook, V.P. Business Development for Johnson Supply Co, York HVAC Distribution and Board Member, and former Dallas Cowboys player Bill Bates who also accepted an invitation to play in the tournament and will be flying in from Florida.

Chris from Colorado won the $10,000 Visa Gift Card! He is the brother of Tim Wagner, an HBA member and the current President of the Denton Division. He only bought one ticket! T.W. Bailey spoke with him the night of the drawing, and the first thing he asked after he was told that he won was “How did the charity do?” Sounds like a good person. The Board and staff of HomeAid thanks everyone who participated in the buying and selling of the raffle tickets. There were 504 tickets sold, with a big rush at the end. Mitch Fadel, the President/COO of RENT-A-CENTER and member of the HomeAid board sold the most tickets – 60; Alice Hinckley with Ambit Energy, also a member of the board, came in second; and Mary Frances Burleson, President of Ebby Halliday and a member of the board, came in third. The raffle benefited HomeAid/ Home Builders Care’s Homeless Housing Development Program. HomeAid’s mission is to build dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives. The ticket sales alone brought in over $15,000 to HomeAid.

The 10th Anniversary Celebration was underwritten by James Cook, Johnson Supply/York HVAC; Michael and Barbara Henry, First Liberty Homes; Ken Jones, Miller Brothers Floors; and Junior Ottwell, Professional Plumbers Group. We had approximately 100 people in attendance. Chef Mike Henry, along with sous chef Barbara Henry, prepared and cooked Bar-B-Q to die for. When the party was nearing its end, the leftover meat was sold to attendees and brought in an additional $545. It was an anniversary to remember.

HomeAid/Home Builders Care, the official charity of the HBA, has completed a $900,000 expansion project for The Family Place, Dallas’ largest organization serving victims of family violence.

KWA Construction, L.P. served as Builder Captain for the project. Harben House, a facility with three three-bedroom and one four-bedroom transitional housing apartments and counseling offices, as well as a multi-purpose facility to be used for educational opportunities, group activities and wellness programming was dedicated May 14.

The expansion project was made possible by donors to The Family Place’s capital campaign which began in 2008. Those donors include: The H. George and Gayle Harben Schuler foundation, The Simmons Family Foundation, The Mabel Peters Caruth Foundation, Preston and Georgia Phillips Foundation, Hoblitzelle Foundation, The Florence Foundation, The James and Lillian Webb Foundation, Courtney Rainwater and the Dallas Stars Foundation.

“The incredible generosity of our supporters who understand the mission of The Family Place made this project possible,” said Paige Flink, executive director of The Family Place. “We will be able to serve larger families who are homeless due to family violence, allowing a fresh start in a safe environment, the ability to enhance their work and parenting skills and receive counseling to cope with the trauma of enduring family violence.”

A resident of The Family Place told those attending the dedication that she had arrived at the shelter with little more than her 3-year-old twins and $5. “I have been so grateful for this clean, safe place full of opportunity,” she said. “You are changing lives.”
